It’s #nationalsunscreenday today and we are celebrating with ice cream on the beach. Normally we go without sunscreen to get our daily dose of vitamin D. 🌞 🌞 But when we are out all day or at the beach under the hot rays, it’s a must! What’s your favorite reef-friendly and non toxic sunscreen for your family? After all, you are literally baking those chemicals right into your body so here’s one example of you get what you pay for!
Did you know our skin is our largest organ? You must be cautious what you slather on it. Traditional sunscreen contains toxic chemicals and then we bake that into our body when out in the sun! Also, sunscreen blocks vitamin D production. We have all have heard the importance of vitamin D. Being outside for 15-20 minutes uncovered DAILY is all the average person needs to produce adequate levels of Vit D. The more skin you expose the more vitamin D you are producing. I'm not promoting nudity....just sayin'! What about in winter?? You need to take a supplement.
As parents we are covering every square in of our kiddos in something toxic then baking it in! Did you know Zinc oxide is the only FDA approved sunscreen for use on children under 6 months of age? You have to watch the form of zinc oxide used though. Scientists are formulating it with nano particles and there is growing concern that these teensy tiny particles get absorbed and can even cross the placenta possibly exposing your fetus!
Some sunscreen chemicals have hormone disrupters not to mention can also cause skin irritation and rashes. Cancer producing chemicals, ya think??
A few Important Sunscreen Ingredients to Avoid: Retinyl Palmitate, Oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinixate, benzophenone, Amino benzoin acid, homosalate, preservatives, octocrytene and fragrances.
So what CAN you use? Look for mineral sunscreens that have ingredients you can actually pronounce, especially ones with no nano particles! These are my favorite brands that doesn't clog my pores, doesn't give me a rash AND actually work! This is not the thing to scrimp on. Don't buy the 3 pack at Walmart!
Oh and let your kiddos (and self) go uncovered for a bit (15 minutes) then layer it on. We NEED that sunshine for our soul AND vitamin D.

I frequently joke “Namaste in bed.” That’s how I felt this morning. It’s cool outside and there’s a crispness in the air reminiscent of fall rather than summer. But when I dug deep into the feelings behind WHY I wanted to stay in my warm cozy cocoon of a duvet it’s because outside of that bed requires me to running on all cylinders all the time. Like an unhealthy addiction I run myself ragged doing all the things until I collapse. When will I learn it’s ok to say NO, I ask myself?
So I roll out into the shocking slap of a cold room with a stream of sunshine peaking through the curtains just begging me to open them wider and get on with it.
I’m struggling to overcome my perfectionist attitude common of an enneagram 1 personality type. I’m trying to pay more attention to it and the soul sucking aspects of trying to appear so put together. It’s exhausting.
Today I purposefully schedule in 1 hour of meditative pilates and 15 minutes diffusing this Namaste blend in silence. A promise to myself to let it go and just BE starting a few minutes at a time.
