Insurance Coverage for Lactation Related Services
Any service provided related to lactation falls under lactation care. We cannot bill it as a chiropractic service. Even though I am an IBCLC, lactation care is not under the scope of a chiropractor. Even though I am in network with your insurance for chiropractic services, I am considered out of network for anything related to lactation.
Many plans in Massachusetts will reimburse you for lactation care provided. Let's figure out what your plan will do. I partner with The Lactation Network (TLN) who bills insurance for lactation consultants at no cost to you. They are only contracted with certain insurance companies though. You can find out if your insurance covers lactation consultations through TLN by finding your insurance below and submitting requested info. If your insurance company is not listed, please fill out this form.

Isn't lactation care supposed to be FREE?
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires all new health plans to cover “comprehensive prenatal and postnatal lactation support and counseling.” This means that breastfeeding mothers have health insurance coverage for lactation counseling without cost-sharing for as long as they are breastfeeding. Health insurance companies MUST cover such consultations without cost-sharing, but they can (and do) require consumers to only see the providers on their list, called in-network providers. Here is the sneaky part....they may not purposefully have any in-network providers! The ACA also requires many employers to provide break time for breastfeeding women (which may be unpaid) and a private space that is not a bathroom for nursing or pumping. You can read about the law related to lactation coverage here.
