Kids' appetites can be tricky. Some kids are soooo picky that they refuse to even look at certain foods. Research shows us that it takes an average of 10 tries of a new food before a child might eat it. That is alot of repeated exposures to something before your kiddo may FINALLY try something. Don't give up! Just keep trying and offering them healthy choices. Let them see YOU eating good choices too. I KNOW it's hard.
At my house we make silly games with our food. I try to involve the kids as much as possible in food selection and Prep. Here was "red day breakfast". We only ate food that was red. It gave us the chance to talk about what other foods are red. We even joked about gross red foods like raw meat and how that would affect our bodies. What are your kids' food challenges?

want to talk about chia. The trendy superfood. We all remember the "cha cha cha chia" song from the chia pet commercial a number of years back. What is it though? Chia seeds are tiny black seeds from a plant that belongs in the mint family. They are usually non GMO and naturally free of gluten! They swell up and turn gelatinous in liquid so are perfect for stabilizers or thickeners. The cool thing is they are packed with protein, heathy fats, fiber and help you feel fuller longer. They expand in your tummy so you eat less. They are 40% fiber! For some people chia makes them poop alot. Others see no change. They can be used as an omega 3 source but they do not supply the best form of omegas so don't exclusively rely upon them for that. I toss them into smoothies, on my yogurt, in my overnight oats and have made a vegan egg replacement for baking recipes. Who else loves cha, cha, cha chia??
Welcome to a month long discussion geared at kids. Feel free to chime in and ask questions. We WANT to hear from you and make this interactive discussion.
So since Dr. Heather A Elton and myself are both chiropractors we must start the month with a talk about the body. I personally am a pediatric chiropractor meaning I only see children and pregnant women. I have seen just about everything and one of the most common things I see is children who sit in the "W" position. This stresses their inner knee ligaments and forces the hip bones to rotate inward. This contributes to kids who walk with a toe-in (pigeon-toed) position and they often trip over themselves when they run. The are usually super bendy and knock-kneed which can make them look bow-legged. This is called femoral anteversion. It will usually resolves itself by the age of 10. Why wait till then?? Stop your kiddos from sitting this way if you see them doing so. Redirect them to a new position, sit in a chair or tailor/indian style. I find these kiddos grow up and STILL toe in and that makes their butt stick out more so they "waddle" a bit. Easy fix-don't let them sit this way AND take them to a chiropractor. |
